Drift National Event report - Reported by R3mix on 2 October 2009

It has come and gone so quickly, but the first RC Drift Nationals was held with the return of Drift Australia. The atmosphere was electric, thanks to the tyre smoke from the DA cars, promo babes and dream of winning the nationals. With drivers representing QLD, VIC and the NSW crew in force, state pride was also on the line.

When a practice lap was completed, it was time to get serious. The drifter would then continue into a rolling start. That single lap being judged, hopefully placing them within top 16 places to qualify.

With the 16 drivers battling out for National glory, the format was a 1-on-1 tandem battle. The judges eagle eyes scoring on clean passes, angle and speed of the cars. The drivers provided a great show of skill and grace, drifting through the long sweeper and technical hairpins of the track.

The event also had more to offer than the Nationals. Team R18 displaying their highly detailed 1:10 garages. The drivers chatting to spectators about the growing RC drift scene. And also RC Garage was in force, a marquee setup selling RC goodies to everyone inspired to drift.

image

A raffle was also drawn, ensuring more drivers walk away with prizes. Fantastic prizes provided by Genki, RC Garage and Drifter Streets.

image

After a short break due to rainfall, it was down to 4 drivers fighting for the title and trophy.

The final run was between Kenny Conomos (QLD) and Josh Tenny (NSW), these guys provided intense battles, and the decision going back and forth it was down to one last sudden death run. With the drivers giving it all for one last run, Kenny Conomos emerged with victory to be named the winner of the first RC Drift National event.

1st. Kenny Conomos

2nd. Josh Tenny

3rd. Allan Jarvis

Just special thanks to Nick & crew from RC Garage, Aidan from Genkidoridori.com, James from Drift Australia, Jason our guest judge, and Tony and the guys from SRCD who help setup. Without them the event wouldn’t have happened.
